Account book, 1851-1860.

This account book includes the daily expenses of Rev. George T. Chapman for the period 1 January 1851 to 6 February 1860. The expenses are meticulously kept, beginning with the expense of this volumes ($ .25), and include wood, postage, post office box, house, cigars, foodstuffs (including many entries for horehound candy), servants wages, paper, pens, ink, books, periodicals, newspapers, church and Sunday school offerings, missions offerings, pew rent, cough drops and medicine, clothing, cars, hacks, sleighs, washing, board, and taxes (town and county, school district, and fire district), among others. There are several names listed as expenses, but the two that come up repeatedly are Mrs. Chapman and Georgiana. Throughout the volume are also lists of receipts including marriage fees, dividends, interest, salary, and book sales. Towards the end of the volume are statements of his vested property.

Rev. George Thomas Chapman (1851-1860), the son of Thomas and Charlotte (Carnzu) Chapman, was a lawyer, clergyman, and author. He was born at Pilton, Devonshire, England and emigrated to the United States in 1795. He married, on 19 May 1811, Alice Buck ( - ), of Bucksport, Me. For the period 1846 to 1852, Chapman was rector of St. Stephen's Church, Pittsfield, Mass.
